How to organize Shopify catalog research in a spreadsheet

A structured product spreadsheet can make catalog research easier to review. It helps you compare what is publicly listed, without treating that information as evidence of sales or demand.

Start with a clear question

Examples include: which price bands are represented, how many color options are offered, or how products are grouped by type. A focused question keeps the sheet useful and prevents unnecessary collection.

Keep the source context

Add source-store and observation-date columns to your working sheet. Prices and availability can change, and different stores may display different currencies. Avoid comparing raw numbers across currencies without a deliberate conversion method.

Separate products from variants

One product can have several variant rows. Count unique product identifiers when measuring assortment size, and analyze variant rows separately when studying options or price ranges.

Clean carefully

Normalize obvious spacing differences and choose consistent column types. Preserve an original export so you can trace every transformation. Do not fill missing fields with guesses.

Know what the data cannot tell you

Public catalog data does not establish actual sales volume, profit, conversion rates or advertising performance. Treat it as an observation of a storefront, not a complete view of the business.
